During Tory Edward Heath's premiership in the 1970s, a kitten called Wilberforce was acquired from the RSPCA. He retired in 1986, with Margaret Thatcher reported to have bought him a tin of sardines during a trip to Moscow.

Margaret Thatcher: quite happy to steamroller large chunks of society in order to Get Things Done, but willing to go to Moscow and bring back sardines for the office cat. So very British. I don't think there's any other country in the world where the national news agency would write such an article about the prime minister's pet cat.
