Newspapers are always doing this. When I was younger it was mostly on the issue of health: to an audience that drove everywhere, sat in front of the TV all the time, and never got much exercise, journalists would proclaim that eating a tomato raises your chance of getting stomach cancer by an amount equivalent to taking approximately 3 nanoseconds off your lifespan. But at least health articles usually quote some expert who points out that if you actually care, you could always maybe get more exercise? The Independent article I link, though, omits to point out the analogous elephant in the room here: in terms of the fossil fuels you use, carrier bags are utterly insignificant if you ever go anywhere by plane, or, for that matter, by car.

Also in the news: Dresden still divided over blame for WWII bombing, in which Neo-Nazis try to demagogue over the horrors of war, as if condemning the firebombings even remotely justifies what Hitler did. Apparently far-right demonstrators were opposed by far-left demonstrators waving English flags, presumably on the theory that deliberate arson of entire residential areas was A-OK when we did it because we were opposing Hitler. Mensch.

And an article about a former Guantanamo inmate, who wasn't tortured at all or anything, says the US, and the fact he came back from American custody needing to walk with a cane is like some weird coincidence.
After he went on hunger strike, a US court ruled that he was in "a life-threatening medical condition" and authorised a one-off visit by his lawyers.
May God have mercy on him, as his life is still pretty awful.
